Book Synopsis
Genre: Romance
The Lucky One is about a marine, Logan Thibault, going on with his life after serving in the Iraq war for five years. Whilst there, he found a picture of a woman which he kept with him during his five years; it became his lucky charm. Logan has lived through a lot and is convinced by his war-friend Victor that he is indebted to the woman in the picture for his survival. So long as that picture was on him, he avoided all the fatal accidents that could have taken his life. So when he returns home, he sets out to find the woman in the picture. Only, when he arrives in Hampton, North Carolina, his life takes an unexpected turn- for better and for worse.
Review
The Lucky One is what you would expect from a Nicholas Sparks novel. There’s love, there’s hate, there’s secrets and there is trauma. I have to say, I love the charcters Logan Thibault and Nana. They were, for me, the best characters in the novel with a lot of flavour to then. The Lucky One is a very moving story about learning to love and trust; I have to admit if ever there was an author who could convince you that true love existed, it has to be Nicholas Sparks. The way he writes about love honestly makes you believe it isn’t just something you find on screen or in the pages.
I did however find myself annoyed when the words “I love you” were first said between the leading characters. I mean seriously, who says “I love you” after the first date? I found that this happens in a lot of Nicholas Sparks’ novels so yeah, that’s one thing I dislike about them. I also found the ending, whilst satisfying, a bit anti-climatic. That being said, I am glad that nothing worse happened because to be fair, a happy ending of sorts was needed here. Logan had been through so much during his time in the war so I’m glad things worked out for him.
I would have preferred more heartbreak though; it makes the love story more real for me. I think there should have been more in the novel about Logan’s time in the war. What was told was haunting so had the novel started with Logan’s time in service, I think I would have been more happy with the ending.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this was a lovely read. I do love Nicholas Sparks and all he writes. I would recommend this for those who want a good love story, but nothing too heartbreaking or too soppy.
