Book Synopsis
Genre: Fantasy Fiction
For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can’t seem to live without.
Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.
Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It’s her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.
Review
If I’m honest, this is a great book for teenagers in love with fantasy fiction. Older readers? Not so much. I admired Grace who is pretty headstrong and independent; I felt the relationship between her and Sam was much more equal than the usual human-magic species relationships you get in fantasy fiction novels. That said, Sam is a great character. He’s not too clingy or over protective- I felt the dynamics in this relationship were pretty healthy- well as healthy as they can be with a wolf for a boyfriend.
The way Shiver was written was great for me too because it wasn’t too heavy with elaborate descriptions but it wasn’t too bland either. I was able to read it pretty quickly; I think Stiefvater has a great flow of writing. I liked that the story line wasn’t as predictable as what I had expected either so yeah, really enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
I can’t actually think of anything I didn’t like about this book. It might not be what I really want to read but I think it was written well, suited great for teenagers and definitely is doing a lot better than what fantasy novels are on the shelves at the moment. Definitely read this if you’re looking for a light, fantasy read.
